On her third album Angel, Welsh composer and multi-instrumentalist Cerys Hafana delves into minimalism, avant-folk, and traditional music, centered around the Welsh triple harp. Hafana alters the harp’s sound using unconventional damping techniques. The album alternates between instrumental tracks and Welsh-language songs, supported by a trio of saxophone, double bass, and drums. The music is atmospheric and experimental, rooted in Welsh tradition yet boldly innovative. The title track is inspired by a folk tale about a man lulled into a centuries-long sleep by an angel’s song - a story Hafana found in a digital archive and reimagined musically. Produced by Owain Fleetwood Jenkins, the album was recorded live in just four days, capturing an intimate, immediate sound. Highlights: Innovative use of the Welsh triple harp (e.g. damped with Blu-Tack). Influences from Breton dance music and ‘kan ha diskan’ vocal style. Blend of traditional folk and avant-garde experimentation. Recorded live with new collaborators in a short, focused session.
